In 2023, my publishing company presented me with a substantial $5 million offer to author my next book. Despite the allure of such a significant sum, I made the bold choice to decline it entirely.
Between 2016 and 2022, I immersed myself completely in the world of authorship. This period involved relentless writing sessions, extensive book tours, and continuous promotional efforts. It transformed into an endless cycle of deadlines that left me utterly exhausted and drained by the conclusion.
By 2022, I experienced a strong pull toward re-engaging with entrepreneurial pursuits. The landscape for content creators had undergone a profound transformation. Artificial intelligence was rapidly advancing, and the pace of innovation was accelerating dramatically. In this context, committing to write a traditional book suddenly seemed like the most outdated and inefficient path forward.
Complicating matters, I remained contractually obligated to deliver another major book, one backed by an enormous financial reward. This created a profound dilemma: Should I forgo the lucrative deal to pursue my genuine passions, or accept the funds and dedicate the upcoming one to two years to fulfilling the agreement and collecting the payments?
My literary agent issued a stark warning during our discussions. He explained that failing to produce the book could lead the publisher to terminate the contract outright. This would result in forfeiting the full $5 million, plus the necessity to repay the $1.25 million advance they had already provided.
Let me assure you, the prospect of returning $1.25 million to a publisher after receiving it is far from pleasant. It weighs heavily on your mind and creates immense pressure.
Nevertheless, deep down, I recognized that pursuing the book was not the optimal direction. Through challenging personal experiences, I had come to understand a vital lesson: Prioritizing financial gain over authentic purpose inevitably leads to burnout and subpar outcomes in your work.
This time around, I chose to trust my instincts completely. I declined the substantial monetary offer. I repaid the advance in full. Soon after, I redirected my energy toward developing what would evolve into my latest venture: Purpose, an innovative AI coaching application.
Once you gain clarity on your true priorities and what truly matters in life, decisions tend to resolve themselves with remarkable ease. My situation proved to be no exception to this principle.
For me personally, this clarity revolved around tackling a challenge that had captivated my attention for many years: How can we democratize profound, tailored personal development so that it becomes available to individuals from all walks of life, irrespective of their available time, financial resources, or geographic location?
With Purpose, my team and I set out to create precisely that solution. We engineered a platform that makes high-quality, customized coaching accessible to a broad audience through the power of advanced AI technology.
I anticipate authoring another book eventually, but only when the timing aligns perfectly, when the motivation stems from the right inspirations, and most importantly, when it carries genuine purpose at its core.
At this moment in my journey, however, my true passion and commitment lie in expanding and refining Purpose. This project ignites my enthusiasm in a way nothing else does right now.
I simply cannot turn away from something that resonates so deeply with my values and interests. Purpose represents the culmination of what I sacrificed a $5 million deal and countless weekends to bring into existence. You have the opportunity to explore it yourself at no cost and determine if it aligns with your goals.
As a final reflection, consider this thought-provoking question: What is one opportunity in your own life that you intuitively know requires you to walk away, even if doing so comes at a significant personal or financial cost?
